I was a away in London for the weekend two weeks ago and a couple of days after I returned I noticed I hadn't seen my pair of bristlenose in my 6ft tank since I got back.
Found the female ok, but took me a while to find the male. Noticed his tail sticking out of a crevice in some driftwood and that rang some bells. Surely they couldn't have bred since I'd been gone...? Sure enough though, shone a torch onto the wood and could see something orange through some holes in the wood. On closer inspection.....yep - eggs!
Left them in there for a day then realised I would have to move them. Luckily I had a 15 gallon planted tank with some baby cons in it (I'd just moved them in there from a 5 gallon!). So baby Cons got moved, driftwood with daddy bristlenose and eggs removed from 100g and put in a bucket of tank water for transfer and in he went to the new tank with the crevice facing the front so I could see what was going on in there..
Later that week I saw movement and the first little dude, complete with egg sac, had ventured out!

No idea how many there are - maybe 20 - and in the last few days they all emerged from the crevice and started exploring the tank. Amazing little minatures of their parents.

Today I removed the driftwood - loads of little guys underneath it when I lifted it out of the tank! - and replaced it in the main tank along with the male. Hope they'll breed again soon!

Any advice on feeding and caring for them? I noticed them nibbling on algae pellets this morning, but what else would you suggest?

Anyone?
(Hi John!)

my plecs enjoy zucchini squash, broccoli, and other veggies, they eat it plain as in from produce area, and blanched, boiled for a few minutes. hth

Thanks for that - I've softened up some peas, de-shellled them, squished them and given them a little - see what happens. There's 3 or 4 fry nibbling on a half algae wafer as we speak! Cute little things! So far I've managed to count up to 17, but there's probably more in there!

We had peas with our dinner tonight, so the babys got some more - seem to be loving it! Funny to watch 2 baby plecos rolling around munching a half pea while the current pushes them about! Bristlenose pea rodeo! Haha!

What water temp and PH do you keep them at ?

I ask as looking into them .

Thanks

Sorry for the late reply - havn't been on site for a few days! They bred in my 100USgallon tank, ph is in the mid range, good soft Scottish water and the temp runs between 78 - 80. Didn't do anything special - they bred while I was away for the weekend! - but there was plenty of driftwood and hiding places in the tank. They nested in a crevice in the wood and the male was a great daddy - didn't budge even when I pulled the wood with him and the eggs in it and moved it to a grow out tank! 35 little baby sockpuppets happily munching broccoli and peas as we speak!
Good luck!

I've got a tank with three breeding males in it (they share the females)...and they breed like rabbits! My batches tend to be on the 40-60 size now that the males have gotten older and more experienced.

I feed algae wafers now and then, but mostly they get veggies. Whole zucchini and canned green beans are their main staple.
