So our baby con has started to make a hole/pit in the gravel... We have only had it for about 40 days.. so it is still small and young. We are guessing 2 months at the oldest. From what we have read they do this when they are ready to lay eggs. It just seems too young... Is it? The only tank mates are the ghost shrimp... Her/his mouth is so small it can barely pick up the gravel. Took awhile. Also the hole is pretty good size.. At least 1 inch deep, and 2 in x 2 in wide. At the bottom there is a cleared spot were you can see the glass, about the size of a quarter.Just wondered if your opinions. Thanks!

Edit: We cannot see any orange or reddish color at all on him/her..1 To determine sex... we heard that was the way to tell. Females have the orange/red color males do not . So does that mean it is male? Do males dig the pits also? Again only tank mates are the ghost shrimp...:feedback::grinno:

Here is a picture it is almost a month old, has only grown a little since this picture...

Well, a lot of cichlids do have a habit of digging pits. Just because it is digging pits doesn't mean it is going to lay eggs.

its just the cichlid nature, hes just digging around to try to adjust his home to how he likes it.

Cute! But yeah that is Cichlid Nature!!!!

its nature,

i have cichlids moving sand around loads in my tank
