Hey all Im new here. Have had my bichirs for a few years now. Have an albino and a senegalus. I saw a Delhezi at my LFS the other day and had to get it. Even tho its a little thing. Just wanted to run a few things by everyone.

#1 I was a little scared that my monster of a senegalus would eat the Delhezi. But they seem to be OK for the last few days. The albino seems to give chase sometimes but it doesnt seem to be in anger. I think the Delhezi is still a little skiddish. It just started to come out of hiding. How concerned should I be for my little guys life?

#2 I noticed something on the new Delhezi as well that I did not notice the other day. The Dorsal Fin(s) seems to be missing a spike near the tail. Kind of hard to explain. And when the camera came out it quickly hid. It doesnt look hurt or anything. It just looks like its not there. Maybe this is normal for young ones.... its been so long since mine were young. Ill try to post pics soon.

#3 How long should I go without seeing the little guy eat before I panic? And if he doesnt should I catch him and place him seperatly with some food. My senegalus is a pig and hogs pellets like a madman when they drop in. He had one in his mouth. It looked like it was a bit too big and then he was startled by my albino and dropped it.

Any help or imput would be great. Thanks guys.

welcome,
how big is the size different between those two?I havent heard any case of a sen trying to swallow other bichirs. I used to mix mine like that before, between a small sen and the big one, no problems at all. But there is always a risk with a big gap of size differences among bichirs.
If one of dorsal fin is missing due to injuries, then It won't grow back, other is due to genetic factor then there is nothing u could do about it either. One of my sen is like that, but still active n quiet normal.
You could train your bichirs to eat almost any kind of food, they are pig, but make sure that food are always available for them as they need it for they growth, for more information on keeping bichirs, there are stickies in the same forum which you use as a guide. Or, you could take sometimes looking at other people post in the same forum.
Btw, how big is your tank?, any pics would be good when you could take some later on.

cheers

ive heard of a sen eat another sen and a dragon fish and spiny eels ive even had a sen harrass a polli til 1 had 2 go

Pretty big size difference because my sen is a beast. Maybe he/she is 5 inches longer. 50 gallon tank with just the 3 bichirs and a giant pleco and 2 clown loaches. The clown loaches have never been bothered by the bichirs... they are actually afraid of the loaches. I do feed them live food but I dont starve them so they dont get desperate. I used to have 4 bichirs 2 albino and 2 sen but I went into the hospital for a week and there were only 2 left when I got out.... and no bodies to be found. =(

I looked carefully at the new guy and its not an injury.. so I guess thats just the way it is. Also the Sen and the Delhezi were lying together earlier so I think its safe.

just keep an eye on them, btw, I suggest you remove the pleco, bad tankmates
