Hello all,
I have been waiting a long time to obtain in my opinion fry from a quality pair of dovii. I went to a guys house this weekend on craigslist who had a 18" male dovii blue and gold cross and a female gold dovii. I only bought one very tiny about .5" baby who had black speckles on its side. My questions:
Should I start with a small tank first? I have an empty 110G & 10G.

Ive tried feeding cubes of beefheart and this little baby is so shy, what would you feed it?

Should I add something with it to lessesn the shyness? I have baby jags im growing that are still small.

Whats a normal growth rate for a super tiny baby and what would you feed as it grows?

Thank you. I really dont have experience in starting with something sooo small. I would really greatly appreciate your thoughts. I hope this is my monster one day.

I always try to put them in the biggest tank from the start. I wouldn't worry about 'shyness' at this size, it's way too small to tell what his/her attitude will be like even a few months from now.

You can feed tiny pellets, crushed flake food, tiny chopped pieces of fish filets (tilapia, etc). They grow quick, my 1.75" babies are all over 3" and one is about 4" in about 6 weeks.

Yes, if you have the larger tank available then put him in right away. No need to wait. let him get used to being the KING post haste.... good luck!!

At that size I would def. not feed beefheart as it may be too much on his digestive system..even though dovii are hardy fish, its not worth it IMO
As the others stated, put him in the larger tank and start off with crushed flakes then personally I would start him on a staple diet early before he becomes a picky eater. Such as NLS .5mm
He will be shy at first but provide hiding places and lots of w/c's and you'll be good :)

Sorry guys gonna disagree, put him in a small tank at half inch gonna be harderto feed him which will equal slower growth. add other smaller fish so he dosnt feel scared and will male him eat more because he will feel like he needs to compete. Good luck he will be huge in no time

Update: I believe it to be a male, I put him in a 40 gallon I went and bought and bought a mixed JD to keep it company. To start off he was extremely shy and hid behind the filters and never freely swam so we got competition for him. In a different tank we bought dovii hybrid with RTM and are growing those now too. I feed brine cubes and break carnivore sinking he likes anythong that sinks.uploadfromtaptalk1377554971126.jpg

To add keeping in a larger tank will provide better water quality because of the volume of the water and he'll grow quick in there due to a lot of room/swimming space. Target feeding is very easy especially once he/she knows where the food is dropped in during feeding times. I'd keep it by itself as well making it "feel like top dog" not having to worry about competition in turn getting used to you being close to the tank faster than having to worry about other fish in the tank. As close as you can get to a pellet feeding would be the best so the little guy can get all the nutrients it needs.

Weve moved these two into the 110 and picked up a female much larger jag. He has a lot of blue speckles in his face and is very bullet shaped with minimum black spots on its side could this be a male?
