has anyone done this or will this be ok until the ebjd gets bigger? the jack is about an in and the gurami is about 2in the water is 80
baby ebjd (less than 1in) and dwarf gurami ?

It should be fine, EBJD's generally aren't aggressive, especially at a small size. This might actually be a great combo, the EBJD won't get stressed as easy with a non cichlid tank mate and increase the chances of it making it to a bigger size.
