Hello all, I just set up a 90 gallon and would like to purchase a lone Flowerhorn. I would like to get one with a large water filled Kok. Since I know I looking at spending at least $200, can anyone recommend the best person or place that I can purchase a baby? I have been on many sites and most are already 6" or so, or they do not show photos of the actual fish for sale. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thank you, Manny

This site is fantastic, an online auction is very interesting. My only dilemma is that on some listings there is no photo of actual fh for sale, seems like generic photos, am I wrong? Thanks again, Manny

Every ad has actual pictures of what your getting the pictures you're seeing are lineage pictures. The videos and last pic is what you're getting.

FOR example this auction. Usually its not really an auction he has it for 150 and 151 but it now lol
If you look at this ad they're tons of weird images but those are the parents and his company. Then a video and the actual fish you will be receiving. I can get how it can be confusing.

You are insanely helpful, thank you kindly for breaking it down. I'm usually pretty good at surfing the net, whether it be research or purchase of any animal, however I just wanted to double check before dropping $151-$200 on a fh, lol. Also I already purchased black sand, however I've read that this may be a bad idea because of the sand mucking up the filter. I figure I can lay a flat piece of slate down across the sand under the filter so at least the sand sifted through will be limited to away from the filter. Do you think this will be acceptable? Thanks again, Manny

Thanks this is what this site is all about helping others!

Been keeping black sand for about a decade. No problems here. Every sand is different in terms of how fine it is. Too fine like play sand is not good it can clog up things and stir up and make things cloudy. Most sands are acceptable though I just know play sand is not good if you have fish that will dig up.

What kind of black sand is it? You have a link to it or the companies name? If its meant for aquarium use it will be fine. I use "pool filter sand" which is like 10$ for 50lbs at any pool center even menards. That is white/brown sand. Mine is really white in my other tank which I like.

The black sand I got was from petsmart.

I bought it at Tractor supply, it's called Black Beauty blasting media, I've read many people use it for aquariums with no issues and is apparently the blackest sand there is and will never loose it's color. My final question is, I came across a fh called a purple flower horn. The photo is beautiful, however for a 2" specimen for around $25 or so, I'm skeptical that it may be painted, any thoughts? I'm definitely going to be going with aquabid, however I'm just curious. Thanks again for the speedy info, Manny

It's an online dealer, the link is:

Also it's $17 not $25 and they also have 2-3 red dragon fh for around $20something also, I do want a baby but is this too good to be true?
Yeah those are nice but its a gamble. Most likely little to no kok and can be female. Even the red dragons there look nice but have you noticed why they never have actual pics of the fish...I would email to get an actual pic of the fish you will be getting.
25 plus 30-60$ for shipping comes out to be normal price for one of those guys you can get at a pet shop.

To be honest with you I've had these types. Not these exact fish but very similar. Ever since I got thailand imports there is no way I will be getting anything of lower quality now.

200$ you're getting high quality fish thats very beautiful with a known kok.
