so ive had a few green sunfish in my 29 gal for the last month in a half....the two biggest 3 3/4" and 4 1/4" (where under 2" when i got 'em) decided to breed :screwy:

the biggest one has the nest and constantly fans the lil white eggs. they have a small black dot a lil off center (yolk?) and a few are spread apart but theres a good 8 orso inaclump.... the biggest one only lets the second biggest one near (thats how i know their the parents). they beat up the second smallest one pretty good, so i transfered him in an oscar tank....not the best idea, but their good together.

so does the male guard the nest or the female? the smaller one looks fat again but the larger one also looks like it lost mass from the eggs.

i doubt they'll hatch...this time, but i would like to breed them...any suggestions?

Congrats! That is a big accomplishment. I am hoping to get some breeding action out of my dollar trio this summer. How about some pics of the proud parents?

ill get pix tonight and have them up as soon as i get to a comp. that i can connect the digi to.

awww...now i gatta clean my tank!

Males will watch over the eggs and fry for awhile. I'm a bit suprised that he hasen't gone after the female. Male typically drive females off after they breed and are as lickly to kill them as they are any other fish. I would suggest removing her for safty sake or at least keep an eye on her.

For future green sunnie breeding read this...

thanks ST.
ya i noticed last night that he does chase her but also lets her come close...it the other two fish im worried about...the Hap. Livingstoni and a smaller 2" Green SF. they go in and steel the eggs and he gets pissed (when he sees 'em) and knocks 'em around. ill move the female and the H.livingstoni into my 55 tonight and put the other guy in my pond....leaving the eggs and male in my 29.

Eventually you will have to remove the male as well if you want the fry to survive. Shortly after they become free swimming he woun't protect them anymore and may eat them. I would take him out after they hatch if you want to raise them, that or remove the fry.
