You can temporarily but Jag may get to aggressive for JD at some point.

coin toss, even that small one liable to be pestered to ill health and death.

My jag and jack are around the same size and the jack bullys my jag so u should be fine just expect some aggression and if u plan on eventually putting them together ur best bet is to raise them together less likely to have issues in the long run when u put them in there perminent home together

At their current size you should have no problem, I would actually say it would probably be better if you had a few more fish in there to distribute aggression. I have always found 2 or 3 to be bad numbers when it comes to cichlids, the little guy gets relentlessly bullied. You can try it with the 3 you have, and if somebody is getting relentlessly picked on, try adding 3 more cichlids of the same size.
My one concern for now would be the firemouth, he is a bit outclassed by the others in terms of aggression, and they also have weak jaws which easily come dislocated. It might be fine depending on how mean your JD and jack are, keep an eye on him with the others

I had a lone JD in a 75 gallon at one time, it was around 2.5". I put in a baby Jaguar with it and the JD was relentless, it killed the poor Jag over night. It's hard to say with cichlids sometimes

Ya they all vary with aggression and ur problem there was prob only having 2 fish in the tank so the aggression wasn't distributed at all just focused on one fish.

Well if the jd was in there first the tank is his territory. And if he sees another fish he'd be sure to defend it. Before adding another cichlid I make sure to rearrange decor. That definitely helps.

Yeah I was saying this for the benefit of the OP, not asking why it didn't work. This was years ago. Thanks though
