Hi everyone. My little Leopard Ctenopoma is acting really weird lately. His belly looks hugely bloated, and all he does now is sit on bottom under the filter intake sponge rolling around and breathing very hard. He is in a 12 gallon tank with a male Betta that he likes to harass, three Kuhlii Loaches, and x-number of Ghost Shrimp. He usually is swimming around and looking for food. Now he won't eat anything. Every once in a while he "coughs", like he is trying to barf up whatever is making him so fat. Right now he is only about an inch and a half long. I really don't want to lose this guy because he is a great fish with a very good personality, and he grew half an inch in under 2 weeks! :WHOA: He has been acting like this for almost three days now. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Hate to say this, but it sounds like a gut infection. If you can get it to eat, feed it antibiotics. You can do that by soaking live worms/shrimp in it or feeding it to them. Good luck with it...hope it's not too late.

Thanks for trying to help me out, but it is too late, he went last night at around 9. I'll remember your advice for future reference. Thanks again.

Did you do an autopsy to see if there was another problem? Bit hard to tell when the animal's small, but it might give a clue e.g. bruising, swelling etc.?

I lost one of my first leopards to something similar. I had been feeding small crickets to the archer fish in the tank, and I think the little leopard "bit off more than he could chew." It came down with pretty much the exact same symptoms. Sorry you lost the little guy. :(

No, I didn't do an autopsy... He was only 1.5 inches and I don't think we have a knife that small. And plus I'm really squeamish when it comes to cutting things.

Well it's my fault either way... and there are 2 possible options...

1.) I fed him a little tiny earthworm and it took him a half hour or so to get it down and it was just too much.
2.) The Angelfish I rescued from Wal*Mart brought so many diseases into the tank that he died.

My Ghost shrimp also started jumping out of the tank after I put the Wal-mart fish in there... so I'm leaning toward that option.

Thanks for your sympathy.:(

Mine died of that cricket, I think. He was swallowing it for about a half of an hour as well. Then he got all bloated, etc....:(
