Baby Longnose with broken back healing pics

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
really nicely healed. lovely looking longnose for sure. however, i would definately get rid of the cichlid & pike

I agree with xander. The 2 potentially aggressive cichlids combined with the small tank can lead to trouble. If they chase/spook him he may dart into the glass which is only inches in front of him. Glad he is healing up well for you though.

definitely agree on all counts.

well done on taking care of the LNG while healing, but the aggressive tankmates should be removed to help prevent it from happening again. LNG's tend to be more fragile than other gar species--

I have completed the transition of this LNG to my most peaceful 135G tank. It took three days to fully acclimate (use the entire tank) but everything appears OK now. I will snap some shots tonight during feeding.

wow that healed quite well. few gar other than the atract species survive breaking thier backs

ummmm...glad the fish healed and all, but i would not consider a LNG in with two giant oscars to be a peaceful setup. it's essentially setup for the gar to further damage its back down the line or have other problems. large oscar (or other cichlids) and gars is not a recommended combination--

Understood. Far from ideal, but I got myself in sort of a pinch until at least my 2+' LNG in the outdoor deck pond is redy to be transferred into my farm pond in late spring. That monster would snack on this poor little LNG like it did a fat ~10"ish Florida gar. All of my other tanks from 90 to 135 G (with the exception of one 90G tank) are sporting far more agressive cichlids, and I did attempt to transfer the broken back LNG to it first. It took less than fifteen minutes for it to eat one of my African Black Knives, so I decided to place it in the 135 with the Oscars.

The 2+' LNG grew out with the tiger oscar in the picture, so it has some experience homed with Gar. I have to keep my fingers crossed, and luckily I have the Oscars trained to hand feed also, so I can totally alieviate the natural feed time aggression. I will begin trying to transfer the remaining ABK's to one of my tanks in the 55 - 70G range so that the LNG can be placed back into that 90G if push comes to shove.

Wish me & the little broke back luck, I will keep the Garmy updated!
