baby northern

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i wouldn't put any fish with a nothern. It's either going to get seriously mauled or eaten. How big is the setup?

Pike won't bother anything too big to eat, but anything close will get eaten, I have a pretty big northern with a clown knife and a Pleco and he doesn't bother with them ever, I use to have some rainbow trout and they were fine too

I would avoid sunfish and bass as tankmates due to their aggression....from my experiences. That said, I had a 12" pike choked on a 8" bluegill....so much for "pike won't bother anything too big to eat"

Lix- set up will be a 55 for starter unless I have my build done I'm planning on a 4'x2'x2' acrylic.

I had a small 6" pike with some 2" large mouth and I lost 5 of my 8 large mouth. I also had a couple mud puppies in the tank and nothing would touch them.

Ya when I say too big to eat with a pike that means same size or bigger, I have a 18" pike that ate a 12", the tail hung out of his mouth for almost a week,
For tank size they don't need a lot of swimming room but in the first 1-2 years the grow to about 18" for males and 22" for females so you might need an upgrade in the next year or so but you'll be ok for a while

I have heard of people keeping catfish with pike, an albino channel cat is a fast grower and would make a good tankmate if they are the same size. Another fish you could keep with a northern pike would be freshwater Drum, once again as long as the Drum is a little bigger.
