I have a quarantine tank in which my 2" peacock bass has been residing in for about two weeks. The tank has a divider - hence his neighbor is a pair of jewel cichlids. The baby peacock bass was doing well.. not shy, and eats like a pig. I just removed the jewels yesterday and today, the p-bass just hids under the sponge filter. Still eats, but he no longer ventures out far from the sanctity of the sponge filter and just kinda sits there.

Is this normal? I'd like to get him some company, but just waiting to obtain some more in the same size range. Is it because he is suddenly feeling insecure?

Any info is appreciated. Thanks!

Give it some time...it should come good again.

You can get some company for him though.

Fish such as bala sharks, silver dollars and tinfoils make great dithers.

I agree with steve get some dithers but the bala sharks may grow too slow and end up food so buy them alot bigger ;)

My bass used to be shy too now they start hitting the top of the water for food when i walk in the house :screwy:

get him more cichla

pbass are schoaling fish and do well in a group

they are heavy schoolers when young

Kewl. Thanks for the info. I will definately be getting him some friends. I guess it is time to start saving up for a nice big heated outdoor pound for when these fellas grow bigger. :) A school of them would be awesome!

if you cant find any pbass tankmates or you cant aford them you can just buy some livebearers like mollies and thell produce tasty fry. eventually hell get big enough to eat them but by then he should be coming out more.
