i have 4 baby red bellys and i bought2 feeder golfish to feed to them they have been quarintened in a 5 gallon tank with 0 nitrate nitrite or ammonia ph is good well feed no sighns of weekness in the fish the water in the 5 gal tank has been treated with copper safe n well airated but i hear goldfish are verry bad to feed to piranha due to dissea's but i dont want to keep these fish but i also dont want to wast them so how can i make sure they are safe to feed to the pirnhas? Would killing them and boiling them work? and is so how long should i boil them? or would killing them and freezing them work? and for next time i decide to give them a live treat what is the safest fish to feed them?

They will be fine to feed to your Piranhas, especially since you put them in quarantine. Goldfish are not a good thing to feed often because it is true they may be diseased. Feed these ones, then look for a different food source.

If you must feed feeders, the best thing to do is to breed your own. If you can't do that, the second best thing to do is to buy them and quarantine them for a long enough time to ensure they are healthy. Look for options other than goldfish. Also, if you feed feeders, you should gutload them before giving them to the piranhas. This means giving the feeders a high quality food right before you give them to the piranhas.

boiling the goldies might make them harder to digest for the babies, so better not do that. freezing won't rid the goldfish of the thiaminase they have (which can inhibit glucose oxidation, causing highly oxygen dependent tissues to fail..or inhibit other pathways of metabolism causing growth lag). quarantining them won't give you a 100% disease-free food.. some microbes or fungi live in the tank, waiting for the right timing, most probably during periods of stress (ammonia increases, temp spikes or dips, etc). wean them to take pellets, as at this age they're more likely to accept them. don't forget to vary the diet with shrimp, fish fillets, bloodworms. hope this helps. good luck!

shrimp! my baby caribe go nuts for it. fish fillets as well, keep them well fed my caribe eat my small guy if i dont keep a fillet with them at all times, i go threw alot of fish, a shrimp in the morning makes em nuts

ok i think i will go with a diferent fish and quarentine them for 3 weeks but what are the safest fish to feed red belly piranhas

i wouldn't feed any live fish, especially those that have been treated with a copper treatment
