Baby Whale and Elephant Nose

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I don't have either of those, but I saw them for sale before and did some reading on them. The Baby Whale is a species of African mormyrid (Brienomyrus brachyistius) and gets to be about 5" long; the Elephant Nose is also a species of African mormyrid (Gnathonemus petersii) and gets to be about 14" long. Both species are supposedly territorial towards their own kind, so it's preferable to only keep one of each species per aquarium; a 75 gallon aquarium should be sufficient to house them for life and should be setup as if it were for an African knife fish (which is a somewhat close relative).

can´t fault wiggles there, perfect answer.
they are closely related species and have very similar requirements

They can be somewhat difficult to feed. I've never personally kept them, but I've cared for them at work. They feed best on live food, but have gotten used to frozen and even pellet/flake foods, but they aren't very quick to find them. They primarily use electrical signals to navigate and find food and have very poor eyesight. For a baby whale, you could get away with a smaller tank, but otherwise their care is very similar

Well, looks like I will be waiting then. Cant afford the tank now, and if I will need a 75 min for one, I will just try for a 150!! Then I can add a few appropriate tank mates, and have room for hiding logs, etc. Whatever he needs. Think I like the elephant nose better!! Thank you!
