Hey guys been awhile since I was here. I had a 55gallon with nice bichirs but I had to sell it because they were getting big and the 55 gallon was not going to do them justice. I sold them to a member here on mfk. I wonder how they are doing. Anyways My new wife is getting me a 75 gallon for my b.day/christmas yes that is my birthday. What bichirs should I start with first. My consern before was they didnt have enought room to turn around in the 55 gallon. The 75 gallon is wider plus I will be able to upgrade when me and the wife buy a new house soon. I had a lap, del, ornate and sen. I want those but I also want some more rare ones that I have seen in a fish store in jersey.

You can go for pretty much anything with that plan, except congicus (unless you find a baby). Im more of a fan of the upper jawed so id say a couple different palmas complex, an ornate, and a couple endlis. Ctenopoma do great with bichir as tank mates, so do datnoids IME so far. Pbass, wolf fish etc will all be good mates

Ya I am thinking and I think I will start with a lap, del, ornate and palmas and add as I go. I really want some top swimmers also. I really would like some cichlids but I know that is a hit and miss situation.

Ive found eartheaters (geophagus, gymnogeophagus, satanoperca) do well with bichirs, but they arent exactly top swimmers. Cichla (peacock bass) stay near the top and have some incredible colors and patterns. A friend of mine had his endli killed by a pair of breeding convicts so dont go with those. Severum look great, have great personality, and arent too territorial. Ive seen people mix them with umbee also.

If you want something toothy like pike characins like hujeta pike, freshwater barracuda species, and Odoe pikes will stay near the top almost constantly if they are comfortable. Mid is the lowest ive seen one go that was healthy and happy

I agree, stock assuming the 75g will be a long term tank, Stick with upperjaw's, avoid ornates they will outgrow a 75, and will grow faster then many other species and may end up seeing tankmates as prey.

Then if/when u get a bigger tank you'll already have grown your smaller species out to a nice size before branching into larger ones allowing u too keep a community going.

^ yeah it would be good to know a timeframe of when you would be moving out and getting the bigger tank, most bichir slow down around 10 inch in growth rate. I have my ornate in a tank slightly smaller (70 ga) and hes 8 inch, but im upgrading in spring to a 200-300 so by the time the new tank is up he should be around ten inch and starting to feel uncomfortable in the 70.
