After a 10 year hiatus, I recently found my way back to keeping a couple of small glass boxes of water and now want to step it up. While not big in the grand scheme of things, I am in the market for a new glass 125 and I'm not sure what manufacturer to go with. I like the look of the black silicone with Marineland tanks but I've heard a few stories about Marineland and Aqueon having a fair amount of seam failures lately. Are they still reputable or should I look for another manufacturer?

Ok yes a 125 leaking in the living room is a problem, but if setup correctly and taken care of I had no issues with them, had a pair of them going at the same time.

For a 125 the tank/stand combo sold at petco cant be beat on price point. Im pretty sure theyve used aqueon and/or marineland at different times. As far as quality goes i believe they hold water just dont expect custom quality fit and finish. I also would not count on being able to modify the tank as far as drilling it for overflow, a lot of the mass produced tanks used tempered glass, not necessarily labeled though. Other than that i hear overall good reviews of these tanks, just off top i can think of several old aqueon tanks that have been running for decades.

I believe the thick plate glass tanks built years ago are better, because I only want tanks I can drill, in order to be filtered by sumps, so I always buy used.
But......Even the used are occasionally tempered, and as Backfromthedead mentioned, they are not always labeled.
I bought a used 55 used a few years back, and.......
This is what happens.......

I have 2 Aqueon 125's from petco Black friday deal around $399, over 5 years old with no issues. Prices have gone up but still a great deal for tank, stand, lids and light.

I should add a little bit. The tank will not be drilled. As much as I love saving money, I'll be buying it from a local shop. This is the only local shop in my neck of the woods and it's still a 15 mile drive so I want to give them as much of my business as possible.

As for the stocking and filtration, I'm looking to start with 12 small Firemouths and 12 HRP from TUIC and then thinning them out as they grow. For dithers, I'm currently looking for a source for either X. montezumae or X. mayae. Preferably X. mayae for their larger size. The tank will be lightly planted with Jungle Val and maybe a few Anubis but mostly rock and driftwood. It will be filtered with a FX6 and something else that is too be determined but it for sure won't be a sump. I've been thinking of a Fluval 407 filled with extra bio media but just aren't sure yet.

If the fish destroy the plants as they like to do. I've had great luck with floating plants and pothos with roots submerged. Really helps with my Amphilophus tanks as plants are always destroyed.

Amazing the help with keeping nitrates and ammonia at or near 0 with fish of this size and only doing 1 25% water change a week.

That's exactly what I'm planning on doing.
