Hey Monster Fish Community!

Happy to say that after a 10 year hiatus from Monster Fish Keeping, I’m back! I was deep in the salt water world and coral game but as of recent, something was pulling me back to freshwater so I decided to part ways with my reef tank to make room for a freshwater setup!

I’m currently waiting for a 120 gallon tank to be available hopefully within the next two weeks. South American Cichlids were always my favorite fish to keep so I’m leaning in that direction. I’m leaning towards an Oscar pair with maybe 1 additional fish. I’ve been all over the Internet looking for some ideas and inspiration on a tank design (driftwood/rocks/sand/etc) as well as the best filtration setup (fx4/6 with two sponge filters.) Tips and tricks for the most seamless water changes (python).

Was hoping that this community could share some photos of their SA Cichlid setups and any tips and tricks they may have for me! I may be a little rusty, but I’ll knock that rust off sooner than later.

Thanks all!

-Mike

Welcome back!
Perhaps an Oscar pair?

Thanks! And yes, I’m leaning towards an Oscar pair! I want to start with a couple small 2 or so inch guys.
Ah missed that in the first post!
Are you hoping to breed?

I would not add the third wheel. With a pair they will see it as competition, only to attack it at all cost in defense of thier territory/nest/fry.
As far as filtration goes, I would go with AC110s. Maintinence wise it will be alot simpler to clean, so you will do it more often.
Probaley best tho to start with your water parameters. Oscars are known to get Hole in the head disease when kept in high PH hard water. That is the reason I gave my girl Toni away to a fellow MFKer. Its best to get fish suited to your parameters than making a fish life in the wrong water.

If I’m lucky enough to find a pair, absolutely!! I know the odds are not in my favor though haha
Best way to get a pair is to start with 6 to 8 young ones one to two inches in size and let them grow out together, letting nature take its course. In time a pair or two should form. It's better to let them pair natrually than us to force a pairing. Oscars sexually mature around the year and a half timeframe at adult size unlike most others that mature way younger and smaller.

Thanks for this info! I may have to try this!

For a 120, what would most of you prefer? An African cichlid setup with a higher quantity of fish or an Oscar pair alone? Any other mix of cichlid suggested for a 120 setup? Open to any and all ideas!
