Back up power in case of power cut

I know this is talked about and i have some some info but would like to know how you can use caravan baterries to supply power if you use the electrics in your house.
Is it a simple thing to set up?
Do any of you do this and if so could you be good enough to post some clear advice on how to set it up?

I need to calculate this in detail but i would like to keep at least the essential things going. So that would be 1 water pumps, 2 air pumps and say one out of three heaters. Lights can stay off and i guess the U.V sterelizers could stay off. This would give me the essential to keep the water warm and sump going. At a guess no more than 1000 watts. This may allow me to keep one of the two sterelizers running plus the pump needed to pump water through the sterelizers.
