Hi guys, am getting a new tank for my Cuban Gar.
Was wondering if a Black or Blue tank background will work better for them?

Shiny Bronze? Nice i tot if with black he might turn darker.
Anyways whats ur substrate colour? or if bare tank, its also black?

with a black background and white sand mine looked like ryans. now i have it in a clean bottom tank with a midnight blue background and it is very dark. you can see pics of it in my update thread in the gar media lounge.

Your Cuban might just be dark from stress as result of being moved, being kept with some of those fishes, and/or water quality. I noticed with my old one that it would darken if it was stressed due to tankmate or water quality issues, and it would return to its normal coloration once the issues were corrected.

water is the same as in the other tank it was in before. the ph has always been low. i can never seem to get it right. my ph in the 40breeder with the aragonite sand is the same as the ph in the 180gal. i am going to get the black/white african cichlid sand. i'll see if that will change its color.

it has been in the 180gal for a while now. everything seems to leave it alone, but it does get crazy at feeding time. it eats and acts just as it allways have so i am not sure if it isn't due to lighting and that it likes to sit under the overflow of my hob emperor filters.

Trying to get the pH up would be a good idea, but, in the end, pH stability is the key factor. Have you considered adding a reactor or something similar filled with crushed coral in order to increase & stabilize the pH?

Some of those tankmates could be bothering it when you're not looking, but that's purely speculation that might be supported by it preferring to sit in that one spot all the time.

i have thought about it, but not to much. i have always had better luck with fish adapting to my ph then trying to change it. i have about 20lbs of crushed coral i may get another canaster and fill it with the coral to act as a buffer.

of all the tankmates the only fish that looks twice at anything is my sng. it will nudge the floridas alot and swim along them. it does this mainly to my large florida. if i didn't know better i would say it looks like spawning behavior, i know that is highly unlikely though. the bowfins just mess with eachother, there are no more aros in the tank, the cats just stay on the bottom, lng just swim around and the sal, well that just scavenges around the tank. the only other thing i could think may be giving it a hard time is my dat. i only see it go after the bowfins when they are fighting. could be though.

side note-i will be moving the dat into my gaft tank once the tigers are big enough not to be eatten by the dat. i cant sell it like i have thought about because my daughter says that is her fish and she likes that one the most. i may just have to sell her piranhas and do a dat tank for her.
