background colour question - please post pics!

Before I used to like black background but after setting up another tank with dark blue background I noticed the fish actually looked brighter under dark blue. Black background looks good as a furniture piece but fish color is more intense with a dark blue background. My next tank will probably be dark blue because I think the fish color up beter. In your case I think black sand would be ok with dark blue background. Black on black will make your fish very dull and dark. You can also get those foam background pieces from Ebay. There is a fish store here that sell them for $15 a piece for the foam block background.
 
Get paper/cardboard the size of the back of your tank. Spray construction foam (polyurethane) on it, let cure. This way, you create a 3D background. Paint with oil-based paint and let the colors flow into each other. Use brown and green, but also bright yellow (sparingly).

Here's a pic of my tank from when the plants were still small and you could better see the background.

well heres my tank with sand nd a black background and another tank of black gravel and black sand mix with no background, hope it helps.

I just use black fabric from walmart and tack it to the wall behind the tank.
That's how we do it down south.
