A recent heater disaster thread in the polypterid section prompts me to ask this question:
Are there backup thermostats available? I'm talking about a plug-in thermostat with a temperature probe that I can plug my heater into and set a couple degrees higher than the heater, so that if the heater's thermostat fails, the backup thermostat keeps it from cooking the tank.

I would spend up to $25 on one, before building it myself.

You may have to spend more than 25. Would a heat controller work ? Ive never used one to be honest but it sounds like what your looking for. I could be wrong however.

Just buy a controller. This will prevent overheating should the heater freeze in the on position.

Ranco controllers work very well.

There are plenty of nice thermostats/controllers out there, but most are $$$$$. Unless your tank is just massive, why not just buy better heaters? The only brand I trust are the Hydor "Theo" heaters. I have had every other brand give me problems because my office is kept at 75F & the tank stays at 81F. Even the Rena SmartHeater I bought died after only 4 months. Theo has been worth every penny for 8 months now.

Because almost all heaters have single thermostats in them. I'd rather have two.
