I was interested in setting up a few rock piles in my 120 and i was wondering if rocks from the yard would be ok to incorporate into the tank. Or maybe some from the local plant nursery. Thanks for the advice.:)

I would be careful about yard rocks they may have chemicals from fertilizer on them when i find rocks i do an acid test and boil for about 15 min. By acid test i mean to put some vinagar on the rock and see if it bubbles if it does dont use it. just my opinion

Id say its okay as long as you clean them really well. I use rocks from the sea shore to make little huts for my dempseys.

my entire susbstrate in my 125 is stones i found in my yard, you just have to clean them really well, and you should be fine

What do you mean by clean them really well? Boil them or what?

hot water, scrub them really well with a brush, and mabey treat the hot water for chemicals that may have been on the rocks at some point.

if you live by a stone or brick company they usually have crap they wanna get rid of, we give away some of are stuff that we get returned, just make sre its NATURAL NOT CULTURE culture has lime in it

A lot of my family has the sides of their houses decorated with river rocks and i use them all the time in my tanks........i just scrub them real well, boil them, and then scrub them again and i've never had a problem...........

i take a short drive and collect rocks for my cichlid tank along the side of the road. I bleach them and then scrub them good usually with just my hands until i feel they are clean. Havent had a problem yet. Some people dont like using vbleach but i find it works well.

ya you can buy river rock from like a garden center its like $3 for a big bag full, like 40 lbs....... just be careful though because too much decor can make cleaning a nightmare
