2 days ago, I did gravel washes/water changes on 5 tanks. I only had storage water for 2 of the tanks so, I used municipal water for the other 3. I temp matched the new water to the tanks, added Prime, and all the W/Ds received recharges of Chemi-pure.
I came home yesterday and almost all the fish in those 3 tanks were dead. I had to dump most of the water from those tanks and replace the volume with water from adjacent tanks. I tested the tap water and there was nothing wrong (Of course, that's 24 hours since I used it on the tanks). I quintupled the Prime dosage and added phosphate sponges and additional bags of Chemi-Pure to try to pull whatever was stressing the tanks.
I called the Water Dept. yesterday and got the run-around. I called again this morning and got connected to another fish-owner. He said there was work done in my area to repair a waterline and sewer break from an unauthorized digging. He said they flush the plumbing thoroughly but, there's nothing they can do if any contamination occurred before they arrived to make the repairs. In hindsight, I thought I smelled something off when I rinsed out the cat's dish. But, I just chalked it up to cat food odor.
The tally, so far, on the losses are:
RIP
12 4-6" clown loaches
12 whitespot plecos
12 rubber plecos
4 brazilian parrots
4 8" green kissers
2 RTC/niger hybrids
2 redhooks
4 large-spot Paratilapias
1 C. spectabile
1 male 18lb Matamata turtle
