I bought a Congo Puffer from my local fish store. He was keeping it in a tank with some catfish, some red-tailed sharks, and some sort of barbs. It was originally $60 but he had marked it down to $30 so I decided to buy it.

I told him all of the fish that were in the tank I planned on putting him in. (Yes I know, most puffers should not have tankmates, but he seemed so docile I thought I'd try it out.) He said this particular puffer should be fine with tankmates, and that he'd kept it with about 15 different kinds of fish with no problems yet.

Within a minute of putting the puffer in my tank, he was dead. My angelfish pecked at him til he inflated and then died in the corner. I realize this wasn't the store owner's fault, it was more of my fault than anything.

I went in today and explained what happened and he said he couldn't give me any sort of refund at all. I didn't expect a full refund but I was hoping he would give me one of his $6 baby figure-8 puffers to put in a 10 gallon that I have set up and running with no one in it. He said he could give me half off.... that kinda pissed me off and the puffers were all pretty beat up, since he keeps them in a tank with green-spotted puffers and all sorts of barbs and stupid crap like that. So I asked him to give me half off of one of his African Butterfly Fish. He had told me they were $15 yesterday, so I figured that'd be $7.50. He said: "Well tell ya what, I'll give it to you for $15". I was like "that's what you said they were yesterday!" and he said "no, i said they were 20..."

So I realized that's why he doesn't write the price on the tanks. he can just make things up as he goes.

I ended up leaving and I'll never go in there again. This guy's such a fool anyway.. he keeps goldfish with bettas, frogs with fiddler crabs, african cichlids with koi, and he has every type of brackihs fish you can think of all in full freshwater... everything from Scats and Monos, puffers, you name it.

That's the end of my rant. Thank you.

Well as soon as I saw it happening I knew I had to put it in my 10 gallon. I ran to the store to buy some sand for it so he wasn't just sittting in a bare bottom tank, when I got back it was too late. Yes this particular LFS owner is a tool. Thanks.

Wow what a dick. I was having a problem with my GSP a while back and I went in to ask why mine wa stressed so I said "so you know how their underbelly turns darker when they're stressed?" and the guy just says "oh cool". I was like you work in a fish store that sells these and you don't know the most basic things about your fish? It was unbelievable. People like that are the reason I'm on MFK

Your somewhat lucky, since congos are piscivores, which means he could have killed all your other fish... Especially since they are ambush predators...

Well that's not really luck at all. As soon as he took a bite at one other fish I would have noticed, moved him to another tank, and everybody would be well and good, except one injured fish. Now I have one dead fish and I'm 30 dollars down the crapper.

I know they are piscavores, I was hoping they only ate smaller fish, and there are only large fish in the tank. Of course, I wont make that mistake again...

I have had success with keeping the Brazilian Puffer in a community tank.. but I think that's a rare exception. I think for the most part they are a single-species fish for sure.

Piscavore is something that eats strictly fish.
