Well, today with given permission I bought 3 firemouths, and 3 convicts. They were pretty small, and I decided to put 2 firemouths and 2 convicts in there. One firemouth almost got eaten by my larger Jack Dempsey, so I decided to reach in and pull the firemouth out who is residing in a 5 gallon with 2 other small firemouths and 2 convicts. Now currently, the one convict is left in the 55 gallon. I was lucky to pull the other firemouth and other convict. But apparently this convict is hiding and avoiding being noticed. Are convicts naturally good at escaping bigger fish? I honestly thought that my fish wouldn't try to eat the others, seeing as I've never fed them live food. I learned my lesson, don't put fish under 2-3" in my tank.

happens sometimes
you think that the fish is big enuff not to get eaten and then some time later you find the fish missing
happened to one of my friend (he was stupid by the way)he added a 8" silver to a tank which had a 10" oscar, which tried to swallow the aro as soon as it hit the water

Yes convicts are very cunning and quickly learn what the dangers are, if you give them ample hiding places they will survive. Unless the predators in your tank are nocturnal, then they will have little chance at all.

so lesson learned section would better fit...

but yeah, bad idea... any idea on the future larger tank? size? plans?

I plan on eventually probably selling my larger cichlids when I move to Colorado in a few years and keep the firemouths and cons if I still have them by then. And getting a bigger tank or building a heated pond so I could keep them in there year round. Plus, that'd give me the use of the 55 gallon as a grow out. I do end up eventually adding more firemouths and convicts.

yea I try to keep all my fish the very close to the same size and even then it doesnt always work.

I tried putting a red tailed shark in there, and they beat it to death. The only non cichlid so far living in there is my ropefish and yeah. The convict is still in there unless the ropefish got it. I don't see it anymore, so I guess we will see once it gets bigger.

imo cons are a species fish and shouldnt be mixed... when they are small they are skitish and get chased when they grow thye throw brutal beatdowns on almost any other cichlid.... everyone makes the mistake of picking up a couple of those 2.99 cons and throwing them in... fm's are not scrappy in any case when it comes to jd's and cons.... jd's and cons are also a bad match ive never seen a big tank with theese two fish without aggresion people need to reasearch and think things out before they trial and error ...... i dont believe in people who dont mind seeing fish scrap there is enough of that on tv now so dont be cruel and keep fish in substandard setting.... fish fighting are fish stressed wich leads to disease so your only hurting yourself...... any fishkeeper should strive to keep the absolute best stock and let that speak for yourself not your corny jacks and cons fighting and eating goldfish routine

so imo angelic dont spend any more money on fish invest in a b igger tank for your jd's first of all decide wether or not to keep the fm;s or cans and keep them in a smaller tank and keep the midas and others in the 55
