i have a female festae in a 100g with other SA/CA in a growout tank. I had a carpintis in there that got killed by the festae. I bought another carpintis and same thing. The festae is 3.5 inches and the carpintis were roughly 3. Are festae usually this mean? It seems to target the carpintis out of all the fish in there.

i have a festae as well. I know that they are more likely to be aggressive with other cichlids than something from a completely different family...like a polypterus or something similar. Im also suprised yours is so aggressive at such a small size, usually they start going nuts once they hit sexual maturity. That's all I really know though, sorry you lost the carpintis.

Females do tend to be more agressive at smaller sizes.IME festae are not usually that agressive until they get pretty large(over 6") except with there own species. You didn't say what the footprint of Your tank was?I never had problems keeping them in a 135gal CA community

you see my fish for sale that i posted 1 is a male festae and 1 is a male caprintes mix. they both hate each other with a passion and try to kill each other but it always ends in a draw .

From my experience, both fish have the tendency to be incredibly mean. For whatever reason, the female terrors seem to be even more aggressive than their male counterparts.

My texas is a animal.I know it's not a carpintes but he did some damage. here is pics from the wound today and it happened about a week ago on my male festae

my festae is more like 4 inches and the tank is 60X20X20 inches. i just don't know why she targets the carpintis. i'm not going to buy anymore of them.

They Don't like each other much but usually its not bad. It's when I switched back to hikari my tex got roid rage.

I have raised a female festae with a Escondido, in a 360 gallon with other cichlid, all about 2" as they grew, the Escondido and Festae would battle, and the female festae would win and control the tank. I had a 5 spot Jewel in the tank that was relentless, I had to get rid of him. I latter added a black nasty and Beani. The Beani controled the tank, and I ended up loosing the Black nasty and Beani to stress. They all was around the same size. I almost forgot I also had two grammodes in the tank from with I still have. I ended up getting rid of the Festae, although I wish I hadn't done that. Any, I find that the Festae is not that aggressive when compared to Grammodes, Black nasty, Beanie, 5 spot Jewel, and Motaguense. At least the one that I had. The Festae held her own, but the others was more of a problem then the Festae as far a in a community tank. Just my experience. My two Escondido, are not that aggressive...
