Well I don't know what the hell I did wrong, but all my piranhas died. I woke up this morning and decided to clean the tank because it was looking a little grimy. So I took out half the water and scrubbed the walls then put in fresh water and turned to pump back on. I then left the house to go get filter pads and a pleco for the tank and returned to a bunch of foam sitting on top of the water and five floating piranhas...

Anyone know what I did wrong? I wanna get more piranhas, but not if this is going to happen again.

you probably caused a spike by taking out too much water. I usually dont do more than a 25% change usually stick to about 15%-20%.

Also did you use any conditioner while changing the water?

Well from research, you have a 30g long.. Answer these questions

How long has the tank been running?
How long has the piranhas been in the tank?
What are the water parmameters?
WHats the temp?
What filtration do you have?
Have they been eating?
What have they been eating?
After the water change, did you add dechlorinizer, "prime"
Was this your first water change on the tank?

Start there.

I more thing. What did you use to "scrub" the walls?

Tank has been running for about a month no problems and the piranhas have been in the tank that whole time. I don't know what you mean by parameters, if you mean pH level I have no idea because I don't have one of those testing kits (maybe I should get one). The tank was running at about 80 degrees. They've been eating bloodworm cubes and nightcrawlers and even ate just before I left. This wasn't the first change and I added the dechlorinizer, I think dudey might be right. By the way, wtf is conditioner?

I used a washcloth to scrub the walls...

 Like what is your Nitrate, Nitrite, Ammonia, and pH level... You dont know, so buy a test kit.. A liquid test kit is the best. Be sure to test your water daily, or weekly if your not familiar with it... Please get one.

What filters do you have on the tank? and what did you scrub the glass with? Was it a clean rag? Could it have had soup or bleach on it?

was the washcloth new or was it 1 from your linen closet? could it have transferred some residual detergent into your tank?

FOAM in the tank? Sounds like something was spilled/added to the water.

Hmm.. Well check the water and tell us what it reads.. If those show good, then its obviously the rag, we may not be able to identify the actual chemical, but nothing else coul cause bubbles/foam on surface like that...

For the future, do not use anything like that... Use your hand if anything. I always use my hand to clean the glass, or buy a algae magnet scrapper or any other product made for cleaning...

SOrry for your loss..
