Some weeks ago, i ordered an Indo Tiger fish / Datnoid microlepis from a local fish retailer. After waiting for a couple of weeks he finally arrived. Tiny as he is, all is well. Now the thing is, when i ordered it ,i was under the impression it would be gold/black striped. However it is not. When searching the internet i came across different statements saying the fry will change it's color when getting older. Is this true?

He/she is now (5cm / 2 inches), eating frozen cichlid food (red mosquito, daphnia, white fish meat, krill, etc..), in a (50L/13G) quarantine tank at (24C / 75F). After quarantine he will be transferred to a 100L/26G tank, containing other small Amazon fish (no prey or feeder fish present)

When grown to about 15cm/6inches, he/she will be transferred to a community tank containing Oscars. I would prefer to get another Datnoid microlepis to accompany him, but first i want to get the quality right.

So? Got something to say? spit it out :)

You will def see nice gold/black eventually at times with these guys. There are those few indo specimens that will stay in the "stable" colors the majority of the time, but most seem to go in & out of those colors depending on the environmental factors you give them. Just feed him often and time will tell.
I would stick with 1 dat or a group of at least 5 or 6 to spread aggression. 2 of them prob won't work out in the long run. gd luck

if your wanting a guaranteed stable dat then you need to fork out the money for a ST, NTT seem to be more stable as well but ITs are known for being unstable.

There is no sure way to get a dat stable.

Well thank you guys ! I am going to give it a couple of weeks, see what happens. As with my Oscars, i do indeed see some change in pattern en color at different times of the day.

What mscamp02 means by ST, NTT & IT's ,i do not know yet, but i am researching it right now.

Again thx for the advise.

great! now i am informed. THX!

I think i will stick with just the one Datnoid, i hate over crowded fish tanks, and bringing in another 3-4 would put to much strain on their tank.
