Here.
Hello Fellow MFKers,

I am a bit worried because I am a new ray owner and have some pictures I would like for you guys to take a look at. Hopefully I am just being overly observant.

If you look at pictures 1&3 - there is noticeable indentations on the rim of the disc.

Picture 2 - shows very peculiar white spots on the side of his eyes.

I already did a 80% water change when I observed this. No salt has been added, but thinking about 1lb / 100 gallon. Also upping the temperature to 86*F (currently at 82*F).

Thanks in advance!

Best,
Jeff

what sand is that? it looks sharp in the pics.

ide change the substrate, add salt and keep an eye on the water quality. try not to do huge waterchanges all at once. 80% is quite alot to do at one time. if your ph was to slowly change in the tank the ray would get used to it as it changed. you throw 80% fresh back in and it put the ph back to what it was instantly. could cause problems.

if water quality is a problem, i do 50% at the most then leave it for 12hrs and start doing 20% every 12 hrs after that till the problem is solved.

my normal is 50% every 2 days in the summer but less in the winter as the warter is colder.

It is the Caribsea Tahitian Moon Sand... been thinking about removing it.

How much salt would you recommend?

Thanks!

oh yer, you dont get wear and tear on rays discs its a sighn of a problem if there discs start to suffer. normally wrong substrate, something biteing them, poor feeding or poor living conditions.

is there anychance the other ray is nipping at her disc?

I do 30-40% WC every 3 days. I doubt it is the water condition. Possibly the severums in the tank or substrate.

Id remove the sand, and gradually add 3 pounds of salt per 100 gallons

Do you have any ideas on the best way to remove that much sand?
Also, how should I add the salt because I heard it can burn them?

to remove i use a gravel vac and just stick it down in the sand and move it around .. i can take out pool filter sand in no time .. but i dont know if that will work for that kind of sand ..
