Ok hello all. I rescued a badly beaten up 4-5'' firemouth this weekend that a green terror had its way with. hes pretty bad his eyes are sunk in his head hes always dark colored , and his tail is pretty nasty lookin. i have him in a 40 gallon by himself with salt and melafix and temp of 82. is there anything else i can do and how should i feed him. Thankyou so much for your help

i would feed him a good pelleted food as it will have the best balance of nutrients to help him recover then for a 2nd feeding i would add a meaty food such as bloodworm (or whatever he goes mad for) to keep him active and provide extra protien for aiding in his recovery. that on top of your measures already started should provide as fast a recovery as possible.

What youre already doing is great, a firemouth by himself in a 40 is fine, plenty of room to move around. Does he have places to hide, they after having the C#%P beat out of them usually like a hiding place so they feel extra secure ?? I would also have no light in the tank for awhile except maybe room lites, this also helps with security feeling. And honestly a few little dither fish, like neons, white clouds etc to name a couple would help because they are small but active, and him seeing them out swimming around all over the place helps make him feel even more secure and out of danger. I dont think you will have a problem, he just needs time to get over all the abuse and he will perk right up again. :headbang2

thankyou and yes there is a fake plant a floating plant and a clay pot in the tank and and i will add some dithers to the tank

I am sure you'll do a great job with your new addition. Thats one luck fish. :)
