A question for all the cichlid keepers out there. What do you do when one of your fish takes a severe beating? How do you go about healing them up? More importantly, what do you do when the wounds become infected...that white fungus that you see develop. I've had to deal with it a time or two, and wonder if anyone out there has a different protocol, a miracle cure of sorts? Obviously, not permitting such violence to take place would be best, but you don't always know when someone is going to snap. I'd love to get some input...maybe a story or two about some long shots that ended up pulling through. Thanks in advance.

If I have a beaten fish, I use salt and/or melafix
If it is infected and looking swelled, I'll net the fish and swab the wound with iodine.

i use salt and i turn the heat up on the tank
also i use a hospital tank

Depending on the injuries and their severity i use melfix, pimafix, and salt along with increasing the temp in the tank..

I scold the attacker for being just a puss, then I buy a fish that will finish the weakling off. They should be able to kill the beatee in one sitting. LOL

salt and melafiz. works awesome

Yeppers, I'm a Melafix fan too!

The whole iodine thing was new to me untill about 2 months ago when I had a badly wounded Geo.Surinamensis. I went out and bought some of this iodine based stuff called Mercurochrome from the chemist for about $5 au. Apparantly you can take the fish out and gently dab this stuff directly on the wound with a cotton bud, but it was too late for my Surinamensis, he was gone by the time I got home... *sob sob* :-(

Anyway, it is supposed to work wonders, but a big tip, DON'T PUT IT ONTO WOUNDS ON OR OVER THE FISH'S LATERAL LINE!!! This is the advice I got from my lfs cause this could kill the fish!

Be careful,
Pete.
