I really want to get a b. yarelli from Rare fish but i would need to put it in a community tank. Is this possible?

Hmmm, I wouldn't trust it with other fish even at a small size. unlike many catfish they have larger sharp teeth and can take bites out of other fish. According to other members they are extremely agressive, and will kill most tank mates. This plus the large size they attain would be bad news for most fish! If you don't mind losing other fish go for it!

Hey Michael, Wes doesn't have any B. yarrelli, he has B. bagarius. They max out around 8" vs the 5' that the B. yarrelli gets.

I wounldn't really recomend any of them for a community tank. They are known to be very agressive towards other fish. Plus they like, cool, fast flowing water, in the range of 64.4-73.4°F, wich most tropicals wouldn't do very well in.

Here is a what planet catfish says on compatability of B. bagarius.
"The only member of the genus realistically suitable for home aquaria. Reports exist of very anti-social behaviour amongst these fish in captivity so introduce other (large) fish with extreme care".

Hope this helps on your decision.

good catch honda, I totally forgot about the cool water requirements! Check out the pics on www.planetcatfish.com man those are some wicked teeth for a catfish! I don't know if i would know what to do if I caught one lol!

Mike I have kept both species in the past and currently have a large b. yarrelli....as for yarrellis...no tankmates(at least everyone I have tried has been attacked shortly after being put in......if it is the smaller b. bagarius ,they are fine with tankmates considering they are fed daily...my b. bagarius maxed out at 9" and was very easy going and lazy....my 1st yarrelli(sold) went from 4" to approx 16" withing 4 months time and was a vicious cat...I recently acquired another yarrelli(only sold my 1st due to fish coming in and he was my only out to free up a large tank...then regreted it).
they are cold water fish that come from mountain rivers with high water flow and turbid waters where their compressed shape allows them to manuver along and hug the bottom...temp should be kept between 73-76*f and a good powerhead with aeration....they are cool fish if cats are your thing..but keep in mind the yarrelli will need a dedicated tank...they do have the teeth when young too....my 18" yarrelli has a very nice set of chompers and uses them...LOL
