One of my goonch cats .... he's gone from about 7" to 12" in about 3-4 months, and growing ..... such an awesome and beautiful fish, and it amazes me how he will sit literally 1 inch from the front of a powerhead and barely move! Loves the current, its like he's surfing, and its so funny ... got him and my other goonch on a stricktly frozen meaty food diet and boy are they aggressive eaters ... truly an awesome fish, would love to see both of them break the 3 foot mark one day!

Nice job. Was it hard? My friends tried a few times to order some and even got some but all resulted in fatalities either at the LFS or in their tanks. That's why I've never dared to give these majestic creatures a try.

he was difficult to find, but not to keep alive, so far at least ... i was nervous since i have a tropical set-up that the temperature would be too much, but that hasnt been the case .... i put a 900gph circulator with an air stone under it on the bottom near him ..... i believe the 65-70 degree tons of airbubbles help keep him cooler along with the current ... when i turn off the lights he gets prime choice, and the other smaller 7" goonch gets another powerhead to sit in front of ... powerheads and lots of current is a must .... i also have 1 the size of my pinky finger and skinnier (i know what you guys are thinking, so cut it out!) in a 40 gallon breeder with 3 baby dats and he already eats small pieces of frozen hikari krill from my hand ... i've had him about 2 weeks and is doing great ... growing him a bit for my buddy, not sure if i'm going to be able to part with him when it comes time though! :D The only aggression they've shown is towards their food, but i will keep a watch ... in fact i have a few 5" datnoids that literally swim motionless on his head and he's never attacked, i think their buds .... hopefully this continues, cause he's growing, and fast ....

I see. You are north of NYC, so must have gone in person to Hillside to pick him/them up?

Thanks much for the description. You said tropical, but 65-70 F is not a tropical temp. Am I missing something?

yeah i drove there, and yes my tank is set at like 80-82, but the goonch is a more 70-75 degree fish. The warmer water doesnt seem to bother him, but i like to provide as close to a natural habitat as possible. The goonch loves current, so when i put the water circulator in i decided to put a bubller beneath it so the circulator blew out many many bubbles as well. Since the ambient temp of my house is between 65-70 the air in the bubbles are that temp as well, therefor when the goonch sits in front of the powerhead he's getting blasted with 65-70 degree air bubbles acting like a nice cool breeze for him.

I have a Goonch too. It's almost two feet now. Mine eats market shrimp and massivor pellots. I have it in a 210 gallon with the top open to the air and I don't heat the tank. Temps drop down to 65 in the winter but get to 80ish in the summer. I agree, it's a great cat, I'm glag I have it.
