A little update on these guys. They're in a 150 with Midas and Geos. This is a grow out situation that's nearing it's end. The Bahia has two females that he spawns with, there are two pairs of Snooks just waiting for the chance to spawn and I'm pretty sure the Midas are getting there soon too.
Bahias are my fav:

He's just a sight to behold! Females are tiny compared to this guy.

The Snooks looking quite red lately...

The way the gold shines is quite nice too. Overall though, i may try to spawn them then sell them at this point cause they just don't do it for me.
This is an extra male that broke its jaw several months back. He went a long while without food but regained the use of his mouth. He was the nicest one (still has the best color). If you look closely you can see how jacked up his face is but he eats like a champ and stays after the females regardless of his impairment.

Very nice. How big is your Bahia red male. Mines been stuck around 8"or so for a long time. I don't think he going ot get any larger.

Looking great Ed, I really like your bahia!!! Awesome job with them. I ran out of patient's with the snooks lol but yours and Baltons are coming along very nicely:)

Thanks JD. Mine's also 8" or so. I need to measure him. Do you have any extra females by chance? I've got a young male that's almost of size to spawn with one of the big females.

Thank Jason, the bahias are some easy fish to work with. Very undemanding. I've started a growout for some of they're fry so hit me in a few months and I'll send you some.

I've got some 0.75" F2 fry and a few 2-3" ones left that I held onto from a spawn last year.

@jonclark- Great, hope to see some pics once they settle. I may have to get some from JD as well.

@JD- Did yours also come from Ken? How are you keeping yours? How is the bond between your male and female?
I ask because my male has no hand in raising the fry and is off courting the other female soon after they become free swimming. Between spawns he has little interest in either female. He goes solo while they seem to court one another.
For this reason i aim to keep a female heavy group in a colony/harem of sorts.....
Your thoughts? Does that sound like normal behavior for this species?

Yeah, mine came from Ken's big wild male a few years ago. My male actually protects the fry with the female for at least a week or so. Last time they spawned he actually chased the female off and guarded on his own, but that is the first time he has ever done that. He spawns with all of the females and doesn't seem to particularly bond with any of them except when they have fry. I have mine in a 72g with 4 females. I kept 5 from a spawn last year that are about 3" now and they are spawning like crazy. I haven't been pulling any of there fry since my adult group spawns regularly. Not many of these in the hobby so make sure you spread some fry around when you have them.
