Greetings MFK stingray keepers. I have 3 rays orb, moto, and retic. All are saucer size and I have been feeding European nights, river shrimp and fish. I ran across an ad about leeches while searching for wholesale worm dealers. They are cheap easy to maintain and full of protein. My concern is should I kill the leeches prior to feeding? I plan to start them on medium leeches about 3inch. What say you on leeches as prey for stingrays???

Very interesting indeed. I would experiment with live ones and make sure the rays are eating them before walking away. PLEASE report back and let us know how they work out!

Indeed I will. Thax for advice. Your right caution is best when dealing with leeches. They carry the ribbon variety. I dnt think they are blood suckers. But they are said to have small teeth. So I will stay close by and keep a watchful eye.

Worms are used for bait also .leaches are just as safe as worms. Your fine, leaches are just to freaking expensive up here $6 for 10 of them.

I found a site tht has them wholesale @$25.00 plus shipping for 210 med around 3inches they say tht is about 1lbs. The site is Jewell baits i think.

Depending on what the leeches fed on then they might be more susceptible to parasites I.e. if they have teeth or suck blood then they may be farmed in a different way to worms which COULD expose them to parasites?

I fed leeches to my rays a couple of years ago. I got a couple of tubs just to try them out. They loved them. The only thing I did was cut the sucker off just to make sure one did not latch on but the rays ate them so fast they would not have a chance to.
