I recently picked up my first baitcaster, my biggest problem is when using lighter lures I find it near impossible to cast with out getting a bird's nest. Using large spinners or rapala I cast with ease but when using smaller rapala or even plastic lizards it seems impossible. Reel has 3 bearings with a 6.2:1 gear ratio it was only 75.00 so I know it is not the greatest reel, but I figured this would do untill I mastered my technique. Any help will be awesome!!!

practice! and adjust the spool tension to where the lure fall freely, but doesnt backlash when it hits the ground.

steady motion, no whip casting!

light lures are meant for spinning reels..you want to use baitcasters for heavier baits like bass jigs, spinnerbaits, swimbaits.also, don't put your favorite line on your reel until you get the hang of it. it was a waste of nice braid for me when I first got my baitcaster.loland some people use plastic lures on baitcasters..i personally favor the spinning reel on those kinda baits.and the reason your lizard is not casting is because, you messed up the line in the reel with all the backlashes. it happens to everyone at first..even the pros.

If you want to cast smaller lighter lures try a lighter line.I agree that spinning reels are much better for smaller baits.Practice,practice,practice.

Agree smaller baits are not meant for baitcasting. Spinning is the way to go for lighter bait.

Well, I do appriciate the help.....I guess I just have to practice more!!! (darn poor me)

we know the feeling..just don't quit!

The best way to practice is with a plug in the yard. Practice, casting and pitching then move to hitting targets so you can make sure you dont waste your day on the water learning. Follow the advice above and you will pick it up quick.

I feel your pain but its worth it.

You just need to go out and do it. You will find that you get alot better at casting and you will be able to put the bait any where u want it. Just with a jig I would flip more then cast and you dont want the jig to make a big splash next to where your casting
