Baking soda in diy co2 reactor?

I saw on youtube some guys put baking soda I'm their yeast/sugar co2 reactors, is this beneficial? What is the purpose?

backing soda reacts with acids to release co2 but i happens usually pretty fast and i dont know if it works when you add it to a yeast mixture. does yeast release an acid to break down the baking soda? i would think that it would somehow kill the yeast you need that's producing the co2.
 
Well I use a mixture of 1/2 tsp yeast, 1tsp of baking soda, and 2 cups of sugar. I have read in many places it makes the yeast break down slower and not cause them to all die off in 2 or 3 days. Mine is good for about 1 to 2 weeks. I have a 10 gallon so idk what size tank your trying to use it with but works well in mine.
