Baking soda

Depending on your waters chemistry, it can increase pH & Total alkalinity.

Can help balance pH if used when dechlorinating.

How much to use depends on water chemistry, tanks size, fish type, bio-load, filtration, W/C's, temperature, eye color, right or left handed etc.

And acts as a fire retardant...None of the tanks I used it in EVER caught on fire! :ROFL:

Good Luck, Dr Joe

Hey Doc.

I was thinking the same thing. And I have had a tank fire, thats a good side benifit :nilly:

What about using Baking soda; (sodium bicarbonate or sodium hydrogen carbonate) to dechlorinate?

NaHCO3,
Chlorine = Cl

Products of reaction
Salt = NaCl
Water = H2O
Carbon-Dioxide = CO2

I do this in my dishwasher, run with bleach to clean & disinfect, then run with baking soda to remove the chlorine.

I have never done it with a tank, can anyone think of a reason not to?

I hear baking soda is sometimes use as am anesthetic for fish.
Baking soda is a pH buffer I believe. I know people use it in SW tanks
