I'm just wondering if anyone is running this sort of a filter in their wet/dry or as part of a wet/dry on huge tanks. All the pond guys seem to be ranting and raving about them, and the theory behind them really makes sense. Plus I think it would be really easy to put a small DIY on almost any size tank that you're running a canister on, having the flow going from the output of the canister through the tower and directly into the tank (having the tower resting on the top of the tank).

Just a thought as it seems that many koi/pond people seem to be far ahead of most others as far as filtration of large volumes of water goes.

Yes I use the concept and its very efficient. Media needs to be open spaced for optimum aeration if possible. Having filters directly over the tank is a great idea since you can pump as much/fast as you like to create good turnover/currrents/oxygenation with minimum risk of failure or overflow. The danger is getting too reliant and overstocking tanks since there will be problems during poweroutages. (not the filters fault however).

For a DIY unit, I use a powerhead and solid sided milk crates which I can stack. Fill with whatever media you choose and its easily accessed for cleaning.
