Every so often I see two of my Balas an theyll be swimming right along side each other, but it look like there hitting each other with there heads. Is this a common thing, are they fighting, Mating??????

Bala sharks are one of the more passive freshwater sharks. They do best in groups of three or more as they prefer to school in an aquarium. Even though they are one of the more passive sharks they are still semi aggressive. Unfortunately, the breeding habits of the Bala Shark have not been documented.
Also, the bala shark requires somewhat of a large tank to be comfortable prefferably with lots of rocks, wood, vegetation, ect...

Since they prefer to school I highly doubt that they are fighting over territory. If infact they are fighting though you may want to take tank size into consideration. I recommend 70g or larger. If they are male/female you could be witnessing some sort of courting/mating ritual. The other thing you may want to consider is they are simply playing with each other.

In any case I wouldn't worry about it unless it gets worse, a fish gets injured or it appears that one of them is being bullied by the other.

the 4 i have are in a 120W 4' x 2' x 2'

Good size tank for them, they do grow large. We have three, so far, in our 150 and two of them have been doing the same 'dance' they were doing in the 75. Usually after a good feed. Seems to be non aggression, more like the ritual ihob78 mentioned.

I had 7 of them, But sadly my marble cat managed to get three.

Is a Bala Shark the same as a Tri-Color? I saw a pair in a LFS (but they were Tri-Colors). They were doing some kind of weird mating ritual. It was pretty cool, one would suck on the other one and they would spiral together. Interesting

Hiya eclipse, Welcome to MFK.
Yes the bala shark is also known as the Tri-color, some strains show a yellow tint to the fins and tail.

I thought so. I've never seen one with a yellow tint, sounds pretty cool.
Oh, and thanks for the welcome! MFK is sure to become a very frequent stop for me
