I am almost ready to set up my 55 gallon SA cichlid community. I am looking for another fish to put with the cichlids that won't get torn up and I read somewhere that bala sharks might be ok. My LFS does exchanges so if the balas outgrow the tank I can exchange them for a smaller fish. The fish will be in a driftwood/fake plant habitat with parrots, 1 gold severum and maybe some convicts. Any other suggestions as to another species that might work would also be appreciated.

eh i wouldn't even put the bala shark in there to begin with. it will eventually outgrow the tank, you should probably consider a school of tetras or giant danios instead, should add some good movement

^^+1. You could only keep balas in a 55 gallon until they were about 8-9", which would only take around 4-5 months unless you got them at a very small size (1-2").

Thanks fisher and drgnfrc. My LFS sells several sizes of balas and they do exchanges (they have a 50,000 gallon aquarium with just about everything in it) however I do like to keep my fish for several years. Do you know how fast the average bala grows if it is happy, fed a good diet and not constantly stressed? Also what kinds of tetras would work with a severum? Most of them are pretty small and my experience says that severums like live food. I asked about balas because I like a very active and most of the larger tetras are pretty laid back. I have never kept a giant danio before, are they very active?
