Okay, I could very likely be getting a reptile, possibly a snake, soon. This time soon means a month at most probably. I'm pretty set on a snake, a ball python specifically, or a sand fish. But mostly, the python. So, for right now, I've got one question. What are the needed terrarium/tank/whatever for an adult male ball python? I've heard the perimeter should be twice the length, and I hope that's true.

In my personal opinion, the perfect size tank for a ball python is a 30 gallon tank. Balls dont really need alot of space and actually prefer to hide in smaller spaces anyway. I have had mine in a 30 gallon going on 2 years now and he seems pretty happy.

what about a 3'x1'x1'? it's probably too small i bet. It's all I've got right now but I can buy a new one.

That size should be just fine I would say. Anyone else???

Yeah it'll be ok, but I would upgrade to a wider tank eventually. I use short, but wide rubbermaid tubs for my snakes.

Are you buying it as an adult or a baby?

Babies don't do well in large enclosures. I keep my raise-ups in 15 qt containers until they are about 8 month old, then move them over to 32 qt tubs, in which many are good for life in (except the big girls that go to 41 qt tubs). Another reason why I prefer tubs to glass...imagine having to buy a new aquarium every 6 to 8 months for 3 years...

For an adult male, 18x24 or similar dimensions is fine. The lower the ceiling, the better. A big tall cage is a just a waste of space and makes keeping up with temps/humidity more difficult.

I highly recommend plastic caging as others have mentioned. Glass is very tough to insulate and they tend to dry out quickly.

Hope that helps.
