I have a group of 6 G. Balzani in a 55 gallon tank. They are all pretty small right now. They are terribly skidish and i want to add something to help them relax a bit. The Temp is fairly low at around 72 degrees and I'm planning to start lowering it even more over the next few days. I want something that schools like Tetras, minnows, rainbows etc. Whats a really colorful dither fish that I can add to this tank to get the Balzani to start swimming around the tank more and that can handle the low temps. I saw a post about this a few weeks back but haven't been able to find it.

I'm open to all suggestions. It just needs to be something that can handle the low temps and I want something that will get the balzani out of hiding and not agrressive because these fish seem very mellow so far and they are only about 2 inches in length.

i dont know that much about tetras so maybe someone else will chime in with that, but as far as cichlids go you could do red ceibals, and also im sure you know this but these guys can get to like 8in so with that many you are going to eventually need a bigger tank

Yeah i know. I figure they will be fine for at least a year anyway. I don't really want to add cichlids to this mix. One reason being the tank size and another being that i want to eventually breed the balzani. They fish i'm thinking about adding are just to get the balzani out of hiding.

Well you can add another type of gymnogeos but it sounds like you don't want anymore. The main problem with tetras and other fish is they have to be able to like the lower temps. I know serpae and buenos aires tetras will work but not sure about any others. There are types of live bearers that will work like ameca splendens. (sorry can't remember any others at the moment) Corydoras aeneus and C. paleatus are cool water corys that work. If you are not too concerned about keeping the fish all from SA there are plenty of fish from Asia that will work. I currently have harliquin rasboras, white clouds, and danios in with my gymnogeos. Hope this helps!

i have black skirt tetras in with my punctata pike and red ceibal. they'd be good with gymnos too. red ceibal can be good if they're similar in size. the red ceibal i just got are a little aggressive so if there's a large size difference it could be trouble. also a smaller pike species could work

Balzani are pretty much the wimps of the gymnogeo world. They'll get owned by chanchitos and more aggressive gymnos.

Are these rio Uruguay or pAraguay bAlzanii? Bloodfins and buenos aires tetras could work... Also serpae. We caught them with leporinus, bloodfins, even piranha :)

If you don't mind going to Asia, White Cloud Mountain Minnows can easily handle the lower temps and cooling period.

Thanks. Do the H. Rasboras do ok with the lower Temp? I will at some point have my tank in the Higher 60's to around 70 depending on the temp of the room. I think i want this fish. I'm going to make some calls today and see if i can find some around Denver. I hate to have to order this fish on line. Probably won't so if I can't find it around here i'll have to go with something else.

Hi Matt. I have no desire to add any Chanchitos to this tank. I really want t non-cichlid to help relax these Balzani a bit. Right now they hide all the time.
