I live kind of out in the sticks any chain shop like Petsmart/Petco is at least a 45 minute drive and all the better fish shops are further in the cities then that. However there is one shop that is 15 minutes from where I live, it's a local small town shop that sells saltwater and freshwater fish along with dog/cat supplies. His saltwater selection is great (use to keep a reef tank - tad pricey but nice selection) however his freshwater is lacking. When it comes to fresh water fish I think I know more then he does - this holds especially true to cichlids (but that's only because I love cichlids and kind of a nut when it comes to them). I guess I would feel better about the place if he didn't sell common plecos, RTCs and other types of fish that require much larger tanks then the average fish keeper.

Anyways, in one of his larger tanks that's full of assorted African cichlids I noticed a male Balzanii which I would imagine has to be a customer turn in as his new world cichlid selections consists of one or two Severums and some Angelfish. First question is how is the temperament on these guys? There will be other Geo's in the tank but only one of his species.

Also I know Balzanii's do best with a cold period, however that wouldn't really work out so well as I would put him in my SA tank that has a constant temperature of 80F +-2F. So the second question is how do they fair without the cool down period?

I hate to use the word rescue here, but I know the majority of his freshwater clientele (I do buy my dog and cat food there as he has the brands I buy and I do like to support local so I am in there often enough) and I can say with quite a bit of certainty that he may end up in a sponge bob tank or one of similar volume.

Before I realized Gymno balzani is more of a temperate climate cichlid, I tried keeping them at tropical temps, they tended to be susceptible to fungal related infections and did not do well.
I now have a half dozen that I keep at temps in the 60sF and they are doing great.
If I were you, I'd pass if you were going to keep them at 80'F all year.
They were about 1" in early Feb, they now are pushing 3"

I have found them to be mild mannered and keep them with other cool water fish, high altitude Mexican live bearers , Uruguayan corys, and Austraoheros red ceibals.
