Bamboo in a aquarium

I was wondering how well bamboo holds up in a fully submerged aquarium setting I've heard several different opinions on the matter. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I tried it with no success. All pieces sort of rotted near the roots.

That's what I have heard before, a guy at my local fish store suggested taking it out every so often for a couple days to prevent the rotting and it seems to be working so far.

They grow better with the top and leaves above the water surface. I had some a long time ago and that's the only way they would grow.

Guess is not so lucky after all. Now I know why mine wasn't growing.
