Hi, I bought some short bamboo cuttings from the garden shop (I know that makes me sound like a pansy)

Anywho, Is there anything I should do before I put em in the tank? just rinse them? they look healthy Im just being safe.

:feedback: <--asap, i wanna put em in as soon as possible, and prevent em from dieing

If by pansy you mean some one who doesn't let you pay three times what something should cost then hello fellow pansy, soak them in a vase for a couple weeks, changing water with rain water or dechlor water every couple days and then before putting in tank rinse in cool tap water 30 mins. Gets rid of any chems and any hydras. Plant in shallow bowlof gravel then pace in tank, leave 6" air space if you want to see bamboo spread. My sister's is now in 6 pots and 2 tanks including my 5g sunny jar.

thanks a lot guppy. I'm lucky because the water in my hosue is well water and it runs through 3 filter systems and there no chlorine whatsoever, saves me loads of time.

should I keep the bowel in the tank when I have it in there?

I just want the stalk to kind of stay as is. dont want them outgrowing my tank and pushing the hood off. We're already keeping a bunch of stalks in the living room for decor, and they re already pretty huge. but than, its been more than a year for em.

I'll do the vase thing. Oh and by pansy I just meant browsing the garden shop, they look/smell nice lol. Finding great deals is a different situation.

As to the bowl it depends on your fish, if you have fish that dig keep the bowl, if not a nd you have a couple+"s of sand or gravel you don't need it. I reviewed what I said about how long to wait and I saw that they were coming from your garden, not the edge of a pond so you can cut the time to a week to clear any pesticides, etc. Be sure and rinse completely as some plant foods aren't good for tanks either, unless you like ammonia/nitrite spikes. Keep an eye on them and trim with a razor blade as needed. My submerged ones grow slower than the emergent ones.

If this is the so called "Lucky Bamboo" you should know that it is not bamboo, it is a type of dracena (the c is pronounced like an s). Also its not aquatic so keep a few inches of the stalkl and leaves out of the water. As a side note goldfish love the flavor of the leaves!

yeah the most common types of bamboo sold are not truly aquatic. they can survive in the tank, but they need to have some air space as well.

Whoa, sorry about the long delay, the bamboo's have been in the tank for about 2 weeks now successfully... no it wasnt lucky bamboo, but at the back, where the filter is connected and at the front, I miscalculated the length of them, so they stick out of the tank, it looks awesome though :D

my loaches dig around their roots so I find myself adding some gravel around their base each waterchange.

again, sorry about the long delay, i sorta forgot about this thread
