banana plant question

I just got some large banana plants some of the leaves are 2 feet long. Will they survive with no substrate or do they need to be planted?

Plant them, they will survive for a while if left floating but they need nutrients and stability.

Since the tank has no substrate do I buy a small flower pot for them? This was an impulse buy and I read that they can just float in ponds.

A small flower pot would be fine.

no they dont need to be planted. if you do make sure the "bananas" are not fully in the substrate. just the tips.
