is a grey shark the smallest and easily accesible cat shark available? and what size tank does it need? 180? 240? 300? 375? etc...?

Depends on what is being sold as "banded cat shark". There isn't really such a thing. There are brown banded bamboo sharks (often sold as black banded due to coloration as pups), coral cats and marbled cats. BIG difference between them when it comes to adult size. True catsharks are smaller than most bamboo sharks.

i was initiall looking at a bamboo which i found gets to 41 i believe? but it seems the best choice to be exact would be the chiloscyllium griseum. so run with that and what would the dimensions be?

To keep a Gray Bamboo (Chiloscyllium griseum) for life - at least 420 gallons (8'L x 3.5'W x2'T) as an absolute bare minimum. A 480 gallon tank (8'L x 4'W x 2'T would be even better.

Anything smaller would really be too small for a 30 inch shark.

what about a 96 x 48 x 14... which of the smaller sharks, if any would this house?

Well - for a bamboo shark - even a small species such as the Gray Bamboo - I would suggest a minimum depth of at least 2 ft.

For a tank that's only 14" deep - IMO, you would be better off with either the Coral Catshark or Marbled Catshark.

Actually - An epaulette shark is very closely related to the Bamboo sharks - They're both in the same family - Hemiscyllidae.

Plus depending on the species of epaulette - they can be just as large as bamboo sharks.
