Hello. I saw that some members were posting ages of their Banded Leporinus. Mine is currently 18 years old. It is in a 75 gallon tank which it currently has to itself. I have had communities of fish in with it throughout the years but aside from a Pleco, it seems to prefer to be by itself, exhibiting territorial behavior with other fish. I have a tree root sculpture in the tank that it considers its’ home. The tank is situated in our Living Room so it enjoys watching People and Pup TV throughout the day. I periodically put live plants in for extra nutrition and fun but they do not last long as it seems to enjoy shredding them.

I’ve only had mine 7 years now, so it seems like it’s on the baby end.
100% a territorial fish that would like nothing better than to be alone. That said, by nature they are a shoaling species so I’m sure better behavior would be seen with a group in a large tank.
They are plant eaters so I wouldn’t expect plants to last long with it. Mine always attacks them, but so does the severum and Buenos Aires tetras so there’s a lot to blame.

I care for a Banded Leporinus at my old job that is now 12 years old. He was neglected for many years, which is why I started caring for him, a bit over 3 years ago.

I really have no idea how he survived. He is about 10 inches, and lived most of his life in a 46 gallon bowfront. He never got regular water changes, and ate long expired Tetra tropical flake food. When I first saw him, I did a water test. The nitrates were 350-400ppm. I asked to take over care for the tank, and have been ever since.

I have become very attached to him, and hearing of one at 17 years old gives me hope that I can give him a nice long ride off into the sunset. He earned it....definitely a fighter.
