The emerald isle
Hi all,new to this forum and I have a question about leporinus.I have a 55 gallon tank and it contains:
1 juvenile firemouth
5 black widow tetras
4 red eye tetras
2 spotted talking catfish
1 clown pleco

I was wondering would a banded leporinus go well or would one be not suitable???

Thanks

Not suitable, speaking from my experiences. The leporinus needs to be housed with robust tankmates, mostly cichlids (American or African).

Mine is around 8" right now and gets along very well with his tankmates (sevs, chocolates, geo). No fin nipping, except when he was smaller and even then it was very little. leporinus.JPG

I used to keep one who was a complete ass to every tank mate. I guess you could get lucky but then again a 55 is a bit narrow for one.

I haven't had problems w/ them and firemouths in a 72g. The problem was tank size and I think they need a 6' tank. Mine killed itself by getting spooked and hitting the side of the tank.

I goes through three different leporinus, all adults and they were bullying every one in the tank, included plecos and CA cichlids.

I have never owned Leporinus but heard they can be very aggressive despite their appearance. You guys have a similar experience?
